Surrender to Wellness…

… rather than fight the illness.

Last night and this morning I have been watching the Heal documentary on Netflix, and then this morning I had a reflexology treatment, during which we were chatting about healing and well-being, and the thought occurred to me that we needed to surrender to wellness, rather than fight the illness.

Because the body only has the ability to heal when it is in a state of rest and relaxation. It cannot heal itself in the fight and flight mode. And let’s be honest, we are in a fight or flight stress mode most of the time. We are always busy, always on the go, always on our phones, always working, always thinking, always worrying… in a constant doing mode.

Then suddenly we get diagnosed with a disease, and what do we do?

We fight it.

We fight this foreign invader in our body. Whether it’s a virus or a malignant growth or whatever. And by fighting it, we actually feed it. We make it stronger. By making it a part of our identity, and our story, we give it life. We make it a whole entity in itself. And we ensure that we will never be free of it. Because that would mean losing part of ourselves.

But what if we surrendered? What if we accepted its presence, and acknowledged that our body is trying to tell us something, and then in a calm, and relaxed manner, began to look at what lies beneath it, what might be causing it. Whether it’s your environment, your diet, the people who are surrounding you, or your thoughts and beliefs and unhealed trauma.

And then we resolve those issues. We change old outdated programming. We lessen the time spent with people who make us feel bad. We change our habits, our diet, and spend more time away from the screen and in nature instead.

There are so many ways to do this. Through complimentary therapies, through meditation and yoga, though EFT, through good conversations with friends. The point is, when you take your well-being and health into your own hands, and take full responsibility for it, you can heal anything.

But most importantly, when you fully and completely relax and rest on a regular basis, you can heal anything.

Your body is amazing, you are amazing, and absolutely anything is possible.

I believe you deserve to be well, do you?

 

We Are One

I intended to do so much tonight. I was going to write a blog post, write another lecture for the Academy, work on a new project I’m trying to get off the ground.

Instead, I ended up watching the White Helmets documentary on Netflix. And despite intending to just have it playing in the background (which would be impossible with all the subtitles anyway) I found myself riveted to the screen, and it wasn’t long before the tears came.

They are volunteers. They were formerly tailors, blacksmiths and builders. They help anyone in need – regardless of who they are, what they believe or how old they are. To them, every life is sacred. Their motto is:

To save a life, is to save all of humanity.

They know the truth, which is that we are all one. That every single one of the 400,000 people who have so far been killed in Syria are us, and we are them. One of them in the documentary is worried about his son, who he can’t get hold of. And he says – What does it matter? My son? Or someone else’s son? We are all the same. The White Helmets love their families, but they also see every person they save as their family.

They are truly heroes, Angels on this earth, risking their lives every day, because as well as the dangerous nature of the rescues, they are also being targeted by the bombers. But regardless of the danger, they see it is their duty to save as many lives as they can.

Their dedication, their courage, their faith and their insistence on holding onto hope – as one of them says – without hope, we are all dead – is truly inspiring and humbling. It makes me so incredibly thankful for all that I have.

Watch it now, it is something everyone needs to see. And visit their website to sign the petition to stop barrel bombs. It’s time for the killing to stop.

That First Book Feeling

Last night we watched ‘Albatross‘ on Netflix. If you have a subscription to Netflix, I would recommend the movie, it really was good. Hilariously funny in place, and quite sad in others, a good British movie. (Okay, so I suck at writing movie reviews, but that’s not what this is, so read on!)

In the movie, there’s a scene where, having written her first book, the character then gets it printed and bound, and then as she cycles home, she has this massive smile on her face. For any writer who has completed writing a book, they will probably remember that ‘first book feeling’. That sense of having accomplished a dream, of having created something you have always wanted to create.

It’s amazing. It’s exciting. It’s a feeling of pure unadulterated joy, because you’ve finally done it!

But it’s short-lived. Because once you have finished your first book, where you were free to create whatever you wanted, free to dream of your success, and free to be yourself, hidden away from view, with only yourself to answer to – you then move out into the publishing world, and from that moment on, you can never have that ‘first book feeling’ again.

Or can you?

After having written and published eight books, it’s not easy to remember that feeling, because every time I publish a book, my mind is already on whether my readers will enjoy it, how to market it, and what book to write next. Stopping to enjoy the fact that another book has been brought into existence, rarely happens, because I have so much to do.

But in order to retain the pure joy that comes from writing, and to remain passionate about creating another work of fiction – I know I must take that time to revel in it, to celebrate it, to enjoy it. And I implore other authors out there, busy doing their own marketing and promoting, to do the same. In fact, I have added it to the list of 100 things I will do in 2015 –

To all writers out there who are working on their first book – really enjoy every moment! And when you have finished, celebrate like crazy because truly, it is a massive accomplishment and you should be so very proud of yourself for having done it.
