Collaborate for Success
As part of my new plan for 2015, I have committed to reading a book a week on a subject that I am interested in, then on the Sunday, write my thoughts on it. I read a lot of non-fiction spiritual and self-help books, and usually have several on the go on my Kindle. Because I decided to do this halfway through the weeks, I decided to finish a book I was partway through – called The 7 Graces of Marketing by Lynn Serafinn. I re-read part of what I had read a while ago, then continued on until I finished it this afternoon.
Because I find marketing difficult, I was hoping that Lynn’s book would shine a light on how to market my books in an ethical, holistic way. And though I have not yet processed all of the information, I do think her book has been most helpful in pinpointing how marketing currently works, and why I feel so uneasy about doing it that way. And in fact, I am already following the majority of the seven graces in my own marketing, but I haven’t quite reached the final grace, which she says is Collaboration.
I have been feeling for some time now, that I need to collaborate with others, that there needs to be a collective energy that has the same purpose and is enthused and passionate, and that when that happens, everything will take off. When you’re an Indie Author, you are on your own. Yes, I collaborate with my editor and graphic designer to create my books, but when it comes to selling the end product, I have done the majority of it on my own.
The thing is, I know how the old form of marketing works – you basically make people feel worthless if they don’t have your product, you make them believe that there’s a limited amount, and so they better buy now or they’ll miss out (which in the age of eBooks and POD books, is a ridiculous notion), and you make them feel like your product is the solution to all their problems.
But though the above ways might work well – after all, we have been conditioned for years to respond to marketing in the way companies want us to – none of those techniques have ever felt right to me. And it is my number one priority to be authentic and real. That’s why, when I got a press release written for the release of The Other Side, I couldn’t use it. Because it was full of hype and screamed ‘buy it now or miss out’, which is really inauthentic.
So how do I stick to this new paradigm of marketing, and still sell enough to be able to live? I have no idea. Lynn’s book is the starting point of this exploration into a new world of how we buy and sell, and ultimately, I think it will come down to the consumers changing things by changing the way they consume. If we continue to be drawn in by the limited time offers and hyped up promises, then marketers and companies will continue to use those methods. But if we step back and take a moment to really think about whether what we’re about to purchase is actually the right thing for us, or will actually help us, or is essential to our survival, and will help us thrive; then we will begin to change things.
Like I said, the 7th Grace of Collaboration is one that I think should be my focus this year. To work with others to market my books, and to find people who want to work with me to create something amazing. I don’t see other authors as my competitors, I would love for them to be my collaborators and friends. I think that working together, we can make much bigger changes. I really enjoyed working with sponsors and fans to spread the free eBook cards around the world for the launch of I’m Here, and I would love to do more projects like that in the future.
If you would like to find out more about how marketing currently works, and how it might work better in the future, then I would definitely recommend that you read The 7 Graces of Marketing. And I will let you know when my efforts start to gather momentum. In the spirit of the new paradigm of marketing, I have decided to keep offering free PDF downloads of I’m Here, as part of the I’m Here Book Tour. There is no limited time offer on it. If things change in the future, I will let you know in plenty of time.
The Twin Flame Reunion is Available in Paperback!
Just wanted to announce that The Twin Flame Reunion is now available to order from Amazon in paperback! I intended to have it available on the 8th, but due to the internet connection cutting off for several hours, I couldn’t get it all approved in time!
The link to buy it on Amazon is: viewbook.at/twinflamereunion
It is of course also available on Kindle, and if you haven’t yet read the first three books in the series I would definitely recommend doing that! You can buy all three in paperback or as a Kindle Boxset to catch up.
The Twin Flame Reunion has one review so far, from Sarah Vine, and she says:
I absolutely LOVED this latest book in the Earth Angel Series … I actually had to pace myself once I started reading this as I could of easily read it in one go, even if it took all day and night!
When I got to the last page, I was like nooooooo!!!! I was actually trying to swipe to the next page on my kindle and then realised it was the end…. or is it? I know Michelle has the next one ready and I for one am very excited about that!!!
If you read and love The Twin Flame Reunion, please do leave a review on Amazon. I look forward to hearing what you think.
Asking for Help
I know that the inability to ask for help is a common problem for Earth Angels. We are so independent, so determined that we can sort everything out for ourselves, that the idea of saying – I need help – seems too hard. Because we came here to help others. We came here to assist with the Awakening, to help other souls figure out their mission, and understand their own purpose.
But the truth is, we cannot do everything by ourselves, nor do we need to. If we all helped each other, then we would make things a whole lot easier. I have had the help and support of many beautiful Earth Angels over the years, and I am so grateful to them. They have believed in me, they have encouraged me, and they have loved me. But even with their help and support, the truth is, for the last few years, I have been hanging on by a thread financially. I have been trying to get my business and my books off the ground and into the world, but financing the publication of eight books, and only having a sporadic income, has meant that things have spiralled out of control.
I have tried to make it all work, but honestly, I am no good with finances. I hold my hands up and completely admit to that. I’m not. But this is the year that I am changing all of that. I will not let myself go around in circles, or continue in this cycle. I WILL find a way that I can sort it all out.
In the meantime, I need help. There. I said it. In order to publish my next book, which I have already written, and to buy more stock for shops and Mind Body Spirit fairs, I need to raise some money. I have started a campaign on Go Fund Me, and if you have enjoyed my books, and you would like to invest in the creation of the next book, every single penny helps.
My plan for this year is to write as many books as I can, and to start making a living from my writing. Because every time I have to abandon my writing in order to make money, I feel as though I am just sleepwalking, as though I have abandoned my purpose on this planet. And I have done that too many times now. 2015 is the year to truly go for it. And if there is something that you were put on this planet to do, but you’re not doing it, I would urge you to do it. Now. It’s not easy, and sometimes it feels like a crazy decision, to follow your heart, your passion, but I promise you, it will be worth it in the end.
That’s what I’m counting on, anyway.
Thank you for your help, I love you.xxx
Banish the Fear of Public Speaking
Up until 2012, I had a fear of public speaking. Not just a fear, but every time I got in front of a groups of people larger than four or five, I would go bright red, my knees would shake like crazy, my heart would hammer, and I would stutter over my words. If I didn’t have a script in front of me, or some kind of prompt, I wouldn’t remember what to say.
I had tried to get over the fear, but because it was a physical reaction, not just an emotional or mental one, I figured it was just part of who I was, and that I might never be free of it.
In 2005, during a short stint in Uni, I found myself in need of cash, and staring at a poster for a public speaking competition. The prize was £160. To enter you had to write and give a five-minute talk on any subject. I chose to talk about Geopathic Stress, because I had just come across the subject a few months before and I found it really interesting. I wrote a script and I rehearsed it.
On the day, I sat in the front of the lecture room, which wasn’t full, so there was probably only about 30 or 40 people there. I tried to keep calm but my heart was hammering away and my palms were sweating. Then the guy who did his talk before me, about dreams, decided to include me in his talk, by presenting me with a bunch of flowers. Cue bright red cheeks. When I finally got up there to speak, I had to grip onto the sides of the lectern because my knees were pure jelly. I stumbled through my talk, (getting my revenge on the dreaming flower man, by using him to demonstrate muscle-testing for Geopathic Stress lines) and was relieved when it was all over. We had to wait while the judges went out the back to deliberate, but by then, I didn’t really mind what the outcome was, I was just glad that I had done it. Even if it had been a bit embarrassing.
Amazingly, I won the competition. They liked the unusual topic, and I think it helped that none of them had even heard of it before, and so learnt something new. You’d think that winning the competition would be enough to get me over my fear.
Unfortunately, it did not have that effect. (Though the prize money was very useful)
So fast forward to 2012, when I attended a 4networking meeting. During the meeting, I had to stand up and do a 40 second pitch about my business. Cue bright red cheeks, jelly legs, stuttering and reliance on a script. Despite this, the guy running the meeting said if I joined the network, I should sign up to do a 4sight – which was a 10 to 15 minute talk on something interesting (not a business pitch). Gulp.
Determined to get my business off the ground, and to get over my fear once and for all, I did just that. I joined the network, and I signed up to do a 4sight. But no matter how many 40 second pitches I did, I still couldn’t eat my breakfast before I spoke, and I still couldn’t pick up my teacup for a few minutes afterwards because my hands would be shaking. I had no idea how I was going to speak for 15 minutes, and remain standing and not come out with gibberish.
Then, just days before my first 4sight, the Angels heard my pleas for help and sent me a video on youtube. It was an EFT video on how to get rid of your fear of public speaking. I followed the video, and then the next time I did a 40 second pitch, I noticed my hands and knees weren’t as shaky and I stumbled less over my words. I did the tapping routine a couple more times, then on the day of my first talk, after not enough sleep, thanks to a late night event the night before, I bounced into the meeting at 7.30am, ate a whole bar of chocolate, decorated the room with angel and faerie paraphernalia, got dressed in my faerie outfit complete with wings, stuffed down all my breakfast, then delivered a talk about Earth Angels that had the whole room in stitches. They laughed so much that I didn’t even have time to complete the talk. Afterwards, everyone wanted to know what I was on, because I had so much energy and enthusiasm.
Throughout the whole thing, the only physical symptom I had was a slight quiver in my knee.
Since my 4networking days, I haven’t done much public speaking, a couple of talks on Earth Angels, and a pitch to a film networking group, and though I still get a little nervous at times, I really quite enjoy it. Making the oracle card videos has also helped me to get used to speaking, even though my audience is just a camera.
If you have a fear or phobia, I would recommend trying out EFT, there are loads of videos on youtube. Here is the one that helped me:

Searching for Clarity
Have you seen her?
My plan for the first week of 2015 was to plan 2015. To figure out where I want to be, what I want to do and what my long-term goal for the year, and even for the next five years. But aside from writing my Love List, as inspired by Dr John Demartini’s Breakthrough Experience, I’m not much closer to having the clarity I am searching for.
One of the biggest things I have been working through over the last few weeks, is why I find it so difficult to plan. Why I am afraid of starting something now that will come to fruition in more than six months or a years’ time. Why all of my projects are very short-term, and why the idea of planning the next five years of my life is so terrifying to me.
I think that part of it is the fear of making the wrong choice, choosing the wrong path, and ending up where I don’t want to be. But a bigger part of it is that I have a fear of leaving things unfinished. If I can see the end of a project, and I can see fast progress, then I am more likely to stick with it and complete it. If progress in very incremental and slow, and the end is not in sight, I am likely to lose focus and abandon the project.
Looking back at the last few years in particular, I can see that there are things I could have done, that had I stuck with them, would have benefited me greatly by now. Like starting a savings account. If I had started saving when I started working, which was 16 years ago, then I would be in the position to be able to fund my life now. If I had started saving even four years ago for a campervan, then I would be in the position to buy one by now.
The only things I have worked on consistently over the last five years has been my books, and this blog. They started out small, and have grown gradually, and I am very glad that I have stuck with them. I started this blog in December 2010, and in 2011, I had a total of just 251 views for the whole year. Each year, my views grew in number, and last year I had 15,497 views. With my books, I started publishing in 2011, and have published two books a year, and now I have eight books in print, a growing fan base and my sales are steadily increasing.
So I know that deciding to do something, and then sticking to it, does really work. And obviously I will continue with my blog and with my books, but what else to choose?
For me to stick to something, it takes conscious daily effort, and numerous reminders posted everywhere, alarms set, etc. My short-term memory means that if there is no visible progress, I tend to lose focus and interest and get sidetracked onto other things. I have got my new planner, Astrid, and I will be blogging monthly on my progress of using a planner properly for the first time ever. I have also been on Pinterest, searching for downloadable and printable planners for different aspects. I found a great blogging planner, which I might have a look at, and I definitely need a financial planner of some kind.
Whatever I choose to do, I need to find a fun way to do it, and it needs to be in line with who I am, and what I love. Whenever I have tried to build businesses or do work that is not in line with my mission and my purpose, they haven’t worked because I could not put my heart and soul into doing them.
Because I know that deadlines work very well for me, I am going to set myself a deadline now – by the time I turn 31, which is in just under two weeks, I, Michelle Gordon, will have an actionable plan for 2015 and I will be taking the necessary steps to put it into action and to go for it.
I’m counting on you to hold me accountable!
What are your plans for 2015?
My Top 5 Favourite TED Talks
I know this is a second top 5, but I really enjoyed doing the movie one yesterday, so I thought I would share my favourite TED Talks that I have watched several times.
I won’t go into detail about why I love each one, but I would encourage you to find some time to watch them, because they have inspired me so much. There are so many amazing bits of gold in them, and every time I watch them, I hear new things, I resonate with different things, and become even more inspired.
The following four ladies are most definitely ladies I would consider to be great role models. Their passion, their drive, and their ability to be vulnerable, honest and authentic on stage is incredible.
What do you think of the talks? What is your favourite TED? Would love to know if you have any recommendations!
#1. Diana Nyad – Find a Way
#2. Elizabeth Gilbert – Your Elusive Creative Genius
#3. Brene Brown – The Power of Vulnerability
#4. Brene Brown – Listening to Shame
#5. Amanda Palmer – The Art of Asking
My Top 5 Favourite Spiritual Movies
When it comes to entertainment, I would much rather watch a movie that inspired me as well as made me laugh or cry, and I think there are a lot of amazing Spiritual movies that more people should watch. Not because they are necessarily the best movies ever made, but because they have an impact.
Here are my top 5 favourite spiritual movies, and a little bit about why I like them.
Conversations with God
This movie is about the true story of Neale Donald Walsch, who wrote an angry letter to God, and then received the reply. He asked God to tell him what it took to make life work, and God responded. Neale has gone on to write many more books, and he holds retreats and talks around the world. Having met him in person, I can honestly say that he is the most humble, kind and generous man I have ever met. Which makes being able to watch a part of his life story even more special.
The Shift
The Shift is an odd movie to begin with, in that it’s a movie about the making of a documentary. A film crew go to a retreat to film Wayne Dyer, talking about how to make the shift from ambition to meaning in life. As he talks, you then meet other people who show his teachings through their lives and actions. My absolutely favourite thing about this – aside from the many insights – is the soundtrack. I adore it. Watch it for that reason if nothing else.
In Your Eyes
I rented this one on Vimeo when it was first released last year, and it’s now available on Netflix (I will be watching it again) It’s more of a paranormal romance story, but it has a lot of spirituality in it. It’s funny, touching, and I really enjoyed it.
The Way
I have watched this movie so many times, that I feel like I have too, walked the Camino, though without getting the sore legs and blisters on my feet. The story is of a man who has to go to France to collect the remains of his son, who has died in a freak accident while walking the Camino. He then finds himself taking his son’s place, and walking the way, taking his son’s ashes with him. I love the music in this one too, and I love the experiences he goes through on his journey. One day, I may even walk the Camino for real.
Eat Pray Love
I’ve watched this move a few times, I love Julia Roberts, and I love watching Elizabeth Gilbert speak too, she did an excellent TED talk (which will feature in a post coming soon) I love the transformation she goes through, and how she goes through each phase in different parts of the world, in her attempt to find herself. It also makes me want to visit Bali even more!
I will put a list of the Spiritual Movies I would like to see on tomorrow’s post. What are your favourite Spiritual Movies? Do you have any suggestions for me?
My Favourite Recipe – Gluten Free Lemon Meringue Pie
I know this is not my normal kind of post, but I am currently embarking on the 30 day blogging challenge, which means blogging every day. (Blog followers, I apologise for appearing in your inbox every day, I promise I will still only post things of value!) I wanted to do some more diverse posts, rather than my usual fare, so for something completely different, I though I would share some of my favourite recipes, this is my most favourite one of all.
Because it’s not a topic I discuss on my blog, I haven’t mentioned that I am a gluten-free veggie. Because of this, I do a lot of my own baking and cooking, and have tried out lots of different recipes. I will share more through this month, I’m sure!
(Disclaimer: This recipe was not created by me, but it is a mixture of a couple of different recipes, of which I cannot find now. And I haven’t always made a perfect pie every time using this recipe, but the latest attempt was pretty amazing!)
Gluten Free Lemon Meringue Pie
Pastry Ingredients:
250g Plain GF Flour
100g Icing Sugar
125g Butter (cut into cubes)
Zest of one orange
1 egg yolk
splash of milk/water
Method:
Mix flour and sugar. Rub the butter in to make crumbs. Add zest, egg yolk and milk/water to combine into a ball.
Refrigerate for 30 mins. Then press into a shallow dish (sometimes you can roll it out, but the GF flour makes that a little unpredictable)
Cook for 10-15 mins with baking paper pressed on top, then remove paper and cook for further 5 to 10 mins until brown.
Filling Ingredients:
2 tbsp Cornflour/GF Plain Flour
100g Sugar
Zest of 3 Lemons
Juice of 3 Lemons
Juice of 1 Orange
50g Butter (cut into cubes)
3 Egg Yolks
Method:
Mix the flour, sugar and lemon zest in a saucepan. Put on the heat and stir in the lemon juice gradually, allowing time to thicken (much like when making a cheese sauce)
Add the juice of the orange to 200ml of water, and then add the mixture to the saucepan gradually. The more gradual the additions, the thicker and lovelier the mixture.
Cook until thick and smooth, then remove from the heat. Beat in the butter, then stir in the egg yolks and then return to the heat until it bubbles. Then leave to cool.
Meringue Ingredients:
4 Egg Whites
200g Sugar
Method:
Beat egg whites until stiff. Beat in half the sugar, then when smooth, thick and glossy, stir in the rest of the sugar.
Put the filling in the pastry cases, and then spoon the meringue on top. Cook for 20mins (depends on size of the dish you’ve used, and the oven type, it may need up to 30 mins) at 160 degrees celsius.
Then serve up and enjoy! (It won’t last long!)
2014 in review
The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2014 annual report for this blog.
Here’s an excerpt:
The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 15,000 times in 2014. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 6 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.
